The Emperor’s New Groove… and Garden?
One of my favorite movies is The Emperor’s New Groove. This classic animated film centers around the arrogant and self-centered Emperor Kuzco, who gets whatever he wants, whenever he wants it, at the snap of a finger. The plot kicks off when Kuzco decides to build “Kuzcotopia”—an extravagant summer resort complete with a massive water slide—on a hill where the sun hits just right.
The problem? That hilltop is already occupied.
It belongs to Pacha, a humble, hardworking man who just wants to live a quiet life with his beautiful family. Kuzco summons Pacha to his court and callously demands that he and his family scram and move somewhere else with zero compensation or compromise.
It is a hilarious movie where a selfish ruler learns his lesson, mostly by being turned into a talking llama. But did you know this storyline played out thousands of years ago in the Bible?
In 1 Kings 21, instead of a groovy cartoon emperor, we have King Ahab—arguably one of the most evil and corrupt kings in Israel’s history. The Bible says that “there was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited” (1 Kings 21:25).
Instead of a summer water park, Ahab just really, Realmente wanted a convenient vegetable garden right next to his palace. And instead of a humble villager named Pacha, we have a faithful man named Naboth (whose name literally means “fruits” in Hebrew, so you know the guy was probably pretty good at gardening¹) who rightly refused to hand over his family’s sacred inheritance.
The Outrageous Wickedness of Ahab… and Jezebel
This is where the story takes a much darker turn than a Disney movie. Ahab doesn’t get turned into a llama; rather, he goes home, crawls into bed, and throws a massive royal pity party.
Enter Queen Jezebel.
She is the biblical equivalent of Yzma in our movie comparison—the cold, calculating mastermind who manipulates situations for her own gain. Cringing at how pathetic her husband is acting, she takes matters into her own hands to orchestrate a chilling, wicked plot involving false accusations and cold-blooded murder.
With twisted precision, Jezebel and Ahab convince the elders of the city that Naboth “cursed God and the king,” and they stone him to death outside the city (1 Kings 21:13). Ahab connivingly takes the land for himself.
But God had seen enough. He sent word to the prophet Elijah to deliver a devastating message to the king: “In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood” (1 Kings 21:19). Furthermore, because Ahab did what was so evil in the sight of the Lord, disaster would come upon his household. Every male heir would be cut off (1 Kings 21:20-24).
It is a king’s absolute worst nightmare: to die without an heir. A legacy utterly forgotten.
Yet, right when it appears Ahab is beyond all hope—when we are almost convinced he is an irredeemable villain who is finally about to get what he deserves—the story throws us a massive curveball. Through the absolute worst king Israel has ever seen, we get a raw, shocking glimpse into the depths of God’s outstanding mercy when an outrageously wicked heart actually appears to humble itself:
“And when Ahab heard those words, he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his flesh and fasted and lay in sackcloth and went about dejectedly. And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ‘Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; but in his son’s days I will bring the disaster upon his house.’” (1 Kings 21:27-29)
That is how the chapter ends. In a single moment of lowliness, Ahab’s humility actually moved the heart of God. James 4:6 tells us that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble,” and we see that principle at work on full display right here. Ahab’s sin was like a mountain, but God’s mercy was greater still.
God is so gracious that even the most wicked king in Israel’s history received a temporary pause on his punishment simply for being remorseful. But remorse is not the same as repentance.
Ahab was so close.
If you read ahead into 1 Kings 22, you quickly find out that his temporary dejection did not lead to a changed life. He didn’t actually repent. As soon as the immediate threat was lifted, he went right back to his old ways and continued to blatantly rebel against the word of the Lord. His lowliness was enough to catch God’s merciful eye, but he entirely missed out on the blessing of repentance, which leads to reconciliation with God. I wonder what would have happened if Ahab had repented and fully surrendered his life to the way of the Lord.
God’s Word has an interesting way of making the same point in different stories to get our attention. Consider the story of David and Bathsheba.
Meditate on the similarities. It is the exact same dynamic. Emperor Kuzco (David) stealing from and destroying the humble, hardworking Pacha (Uriah). The word of the Lord came to both kings, pronouncing judgment for their evil actions. The penalty for breaking God’s law would cost both kings their beloved sons.
But there is a crucial difference. Ahab responded to the consequences. He didn’t want to lose his dynasty. Because his heart wasn’t truly changed, as soon as he felt relief from the Lord, he went right back to his disobedience.
David’s response, on the other hand, was rooted in a broken heart over his fractured relationship with God. David cried out, “Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just” (Psalm 51:4).
The prophet Nathan told David the word of the Lord, that the son he had with Bathsheba would surely die. When the consequence came and the child passed away, although he lost his son, you would think he would continue mourning. But he did just the opposite. He worshiped (2 Samuel 12:20).
And unlike Ahab, David’s legacy was not cut off. In fact, he ended up having another son through Bathsheba—Solomon—through whom would eventually come the Savior of the world, King Jesus.
I know what started as a fun movie comparison has turned heavy with Ahab. But I want to encourage you to hear the promise of God shining through all the muck and mire: God is moved by our repentance.
God’s mercy is bigger than the ocean, and it is entirely available to those with a humbled heart. If God was moved by evil Ahab’s fleetingly remorseful response, how much more is He moved by our repentant response on this side of the Cross? Repentance isn’t just sadness from sin and repeated apologies; repentance is a change of mind, heart, and direction. It is the ongoing key that unlocks the door to God’s great mercy, where His power is made perfect in our weakness.
Sometimes God uses humiliation and rock bottom to shake us up. But while a cartoon emperor needed a magic potion and a llama transformation to change his ways, we have something infinitely better. Fix your eyes on the massive, unrelenting mercy of God. Think deeply on Jesus on the cross. Like Naboth, He was the one falsely accused of cursing God and the king (Caesar). He was the one handed over to the elders and chief priests to be crucified outside the city, even though He did nothing wrong. Yet Jesus looked at His enemies and said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
God showed His great love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). By His blood, He redeemed us. And He did not stay in the grave. He rose again, defeating death, and is currently seated at the right hand of the Father with all power and authority. He offers everyone who truly repents and puts their faith in Him a great, big mercy: the total forgiveness of sins.
On top of that, He offers a Great Big Gift: the promised Holy Spirit to make a home in our hearts, empowering us to lead a faithful and faith-filled life that actually pleases God.
Second Corinthians 7:10 reminds us, “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” Ahab displayed worldly grief—sadness about the consequences of sin. David displayed a godly grief—sadness about a broken relationship with God because of sin. The Lord convicted both kings, but there were two completely different responses. And outcomes.
The Holy Spirit is faithful to lovingly convict us because He wants absolutely nothing separating us from God. When you feel that conviction, don’t sit in worldly grief. Let it move you into the love of God. Let it draw you away from the shallow sorrow of Ahab and into the deeply rooted, worshipful repentance of David. Now is the time for repentance and restored relationship with Jesus. What a beautiful gift! May we stop running from God and instead, as soon as we recognize any distance from Him, run back into the arms of our Heavenly Father.
