Psalm 63:1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
King David, likely writing this psalm fleeing from either King Saul or his son Absalom, penned these words not from the throne, but from a desert cave. Hear the words that pour out of his heart, much like the tears and perfume of Mary lavished upon the feet of Jesus, “My God, my soul thirsts for You.”
I find myself needing to repent from giving Jesus half-hearted worship:
I thirst for coffee more than Your Living Water.
My flesh refuses to sit still before You and a tarry with You for an hour in Your sanctuary.
My lips stay closed, robbing You of the praise You deserve.
My mind strays to my phone, social media, the tasks of the day, rather than be captivated by Your glory.
When You wake me up in the middle of the night, and want to be intimate with me, I am too tired to get out of bed. In the morning, I snooze three times too many cutting short my time with You.
My home is pre-warmed to 78 degrees while my love is chilly.
I hesitate to tell others about You when You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me!
I’ve trusted more in money than Your provision, more in my giftings than Your Grace, more in knowledge than Knowing You, more in pleasure than Your Presence.
Forgive me. Forgive us.
Lord, restore in me a hunger and thirst for You. Lord, I repent for growing comfortable in this season, like David, when the kings were supposed to go out to battle but he stayed home. Now is the time for spiritual battle! Teach me how I can make You comfortable, dwelling in the sanctuary of my heart. Show me what I must give up to make you first place. Make me a disciplined man, disciplined in the ways of Your Grace. Today, I will rejoice in you and give you the praise You deserve. Amen.
Psalms 63
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
When I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.
But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth;
They shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped.
Painting: Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane while Peter, James, And John Fall Asleep
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?”
Matthew 26:39-40 ESV
Such a needed challenge, Mitch! Thank you for boldly and compassionately speaking truth!
So good! Comfort was a key word last week in our service! It was so evident that He was saying “you think it serves you well, but it does not!” You are spot on!
What an awesome idea. Makes me thirsty just thinking about it!
SO GOOD
Okay now Mitch, the spirit of God is telling on me, as I read your blog sipping a cup of coffee! One of my favorite songs is “Killing Me Softly” by Roberta Flack…”singing my life with his words”. Convicting yet compassionate. Thank you for FIA.
“Now is the time for spiritual battle!”… so true! Thanks Mitch.
